We're only a few weeks away from the release of Glimmer of Destiny, the second novel in The Prince of Hellscape Series. As I prepare for launch day, I still find it hard to believe that I'm about to publish my fifth novel. Especially when it feels like only yesterday that I released my debut novel, Wicked Hunt, four years ago this month.
While the concept behind The Empath Series isn't nearly as old as The Prince of Hellscape Series, I've always had a soft spot for The Empath Series. It follows Nathaniel Colt, a reclusive empath with a troubled past, who finds himself drawn into deadly cat-and-mouse games with ruthless serial killers. What begins as a favor to a friend soon becomes something far more personal and dangerous.
The origin of The Empath Series
The spark came from watching The Listener, a Canadian TV series about a telepathic EMT who helps law enforcement solve crimes. Back then, I had no idea where the journey would lead. I only knew that the idea of someone burdened with an extraordinary ability who uses it for solving crimes fascinated me.
The problem was that telepathy felt a little too familiar. I wanted a paranormal ability that offered similar storytelling opportunities while feeling more unique. Since psychometry and other psychic phenomena had always fascinated me, I eventually settled on the idea of an empath.
At first glance, sensing other people's emotions might sound like a gift. But imagine going through puberty while constantly absorbing the feelings of everyone around you. Most teenagers already struggle to understand their own emotions. Add hundreds of other emotional signals to the mix, and life becomes a lot more complicated.
That's how Nathaniel Colt, and eventually Wicked Hunt, were created. And four years later, readers are still discovering Colt's story, and I'm incredibly grateful for that.
