“Fire in the Mind” by Arjay Lewis - Book Review

Arjay Lewis’s Fire in the Mind, the first book in the Doctor Wise series, is full of psychic mystery. This story blends the classic paranormal detective story with the compelling origin story of a superhero.

A victim engulfed in flames. A psychic series of clues. Can a PhD with incredible mental powers stop a real-life firestarter?

Following a personal tragedy, Dr. Leonard Wise is slowly healing his body and mind. At the behest of a friend, Leonard travels to New Jersey to deliver a lecture on “Parapsychology and Evidence Gathering.” A troubled local detective, however, calls upon his expertise to help investigate a potential homicide case involving arson. Intrigued by the mystery, Leonard uses his unique psychic skills to solve it.

Despite, or even because of, his flaws, Leonard remains a relatable and realistic protagonist. He’s scared and sometimes even resentful of his new abilities. But as the mystery unfolds, Leonard gets surer of himself and his “gifts.”

A formidable foil to Leonard’s endeavors, the antagonist exudes a sinister narcissism that adds layers of tension to the narrative canvas. The authors crafted the supporting characters with sufficient depth to maintain their appeal.

The narrative takes its time to gather momentum. To be honest, it tested my patience, and I had to fight the urge to abandon the tale. I’m glad I didn't give up because Fire in the Mind unfolds into an engaging and immersive read.

Arjay Lewis skillfully blends the paranormal and everyday life into a suspenseful murder mystery that ultimately grabs attention.
